VALIE EXPORT @ WORM

Originally changing her name in 1967 to become VALIE EXPORT (always written in upper-case letters, like an artistic logo) was a gesture of self-determination, shedding her father’s and husband’s names and appropriating her new surname from a popular brand of cigarettes.

EXPORT’s early guerilla performances including Tapp- und Tast-Kino ("Tap and Touch Cinema") and Aktionshose:Genitalpanik (Action Pants: Genital Panic) have attained an iconic status in feminist art history. Through these acts of artistic daring, EXPORT challenged the objectification of the female form by confronting voyeurs with a body that returned the gaze.

Incredibly productive and active as an artist, curator and teacher, we're very happy that VALIE will be with us tonight at WORM to introduce this selection of some of her crucial early film and performance works.

///Many thanks to the FILMMUSEUM, Austrian Embassy, Piet Zwart Institute and Sylvia Szely for their support in making the evening possible ///
